Albany Christmas Lights

Christmas light installation across the Capital Region

Christmas light installation across the Capital Region means three kinds of houses: city rowhouses, suburban colonials and village Victorians, each lit a little differently. Christmas lights on Albany and Troy rowhouses

In Albany's Center Square and the brownstone blocks of Troy, houses share walls and sit right on the sidewalk. There's no front lawn to light and often no sloped roofline at all, just a flat roof finished with a cornice. City jobs focus on what people see from the street: the cornice where it's reachable, the windows, the front door and stoop railings wrapped in garland. The questions are city questions too: where the truck parks, whether there's an outdoor outlet, and whether a cord has to come out a window.

Suburban colonials in Clifton Park, Colonie and Niskayuna

Out in Clifton Park, Colonie and Niskayuna, the house changes shape: two-story colonials with long gutter lines, a garage roof, a peak or two over the front door, and a lawn with a few trees. This is classic roofline work, with C9 bulbs along the gutters and peaks and mini lights on the front-yard trees and foundation shrubs. Second-story gutters mean taller ladders, and newer subdivisions sometimes have an HOA that wants a say. In Loudonville, big lots and mature trees can outshine the house itself.

Victorian rooflines in Saratoga Springs and Ballston Spa

The older homes along North Broadway and Union Avenue in Saratoga Springs, and the Victorians around the village center of Ballston Spa, are a different job again. Steep, broken rooflines, gables, deep porches and lots of trim add up to a lot of footage on a tall house. Lighting every edge is rarely the best answer. Picking the porch, the front gable and the railings usually looks better and keeps the job on ladders instead of a lift.

Does my HOA need to approve Christmas lights?

Some HOAs in newer Capital Region subdivisions have rules on holiday lighting. Check with your board before the install and mention any rules in your quote request.
